Question 1990 up Samurai dffs

Ths statement is posted on Trailtoughs site. "Note: 1990 up Samurais must use early style carrier when using this locker in the front."

http://www.trailtough.com/index.php?...mart&Itemid=53

What is the difference between the early and late front diffs?

Are the rear diffs the same on both early and late?

Interesting question. I'm working on a full spool set up and wonder if it would fit in both carriers

Years ago, I think I read that there is a ridge on the side gears that had to be removed. Not sure, could be I was just dreaming.

I received the following email response from Trail Tough.:

They simply do not fit nor work correctly in the single spider pin carrier
design.

Thanks,
Brent

This is a copy and post from rocky road

Suzuki (in their infinite wisdom) decided to change the front carrier units to a 2 pin carrier. This basically makes it impossible to add a locker without changing the carrier.

I have read it elsewhere to but can't remember where. from what I think I remember it just effects the front carrier.

I am having flash backs which say the same thing as Brent and Seven.

I have a front diff on the bench with the locker waiting for me to install. But, it is from a pre-'90 Zuke.

Around the 88.5 model they changed the front carrier to the same type as the trackicks have (just a single crosspin). I say around 88.5, because 88.5 samurais can have either pre-88.5 or post 88.5 parts in them.
I am pretty sure lockers that reuse the stock sidegears will fit and work in the single crosspin carriers...seems like I test fit one years ago, just to check. But the reason the 3 pin carriers are more desireable, is because they are stronger that the single crosspin carriers.

The rear carriers are the same for all 86-95 samurais.

Lockers, spools and the like will need a 4 pin carrier. I had to get one for the locker up front. Essentially what is said in here is correct.

If you have a steady hand /tools you drill out a 2 pin carrier to make it a 4 pin carrier.
OR
Source a rear carrier, which is 4 pin. Another member, Trail Tough or Myron @ ZOR maybe able to help with this.
