black gear oil?

I'm having a pretty big road trip coming up fairly soon so I figured it was as good a time as any to change all my fluids. I've owned the sami a little over a year and havnt changed or inspected any of the fluids other then the oil/coolant.

Anyways I just changed my front diff fluid (it started raining so I havnt gotten to the t-case,tranny or rear diff) and what came out was as black as used engine oil with a small amount of cream colour floating on top. I'm assuming the cream is from water getting in? My front right knuckle ball has a slight leak where I'm thinking the water got in but what about the black oil? What would have caused this? I dont have much experience changing axle fluid but whenever ive done it in the past its always looked more or less like how it went in. Is this from overheating or an indication of anything that I should give some attention?

Have you gone through deep water/mud? is there a cap or hose on your vent tube?

Vent tubes have the caps. I did cross a river about a year ago but thats about it. Rear diff looked about the same, tranny was more of a grey colour but not much cleaner looking and the x-fer case looked pretty clean. Didnt notice any metal chunks in it so I'm just going to assume it was never changed and Its all good. The truck shifts smoother now and rolls a bit quieter which is nice.
